Save the Kiwi Privacy Policy

In this privacy policy, the terms ‘we’, ‘us’, and ‘our’ refer to The Kiwi Trust (trading as Save the Kiwi). Our office is at the B:HIVE, Smales Farm, 72 Taharoto Road, Takapuna, Auckland 0622. We partner with iwi, conservation groups, communities, organisations, and the Department of Conservation / Te Papa Atawhai to reverse the decline of the national kiwi population and create more kiwi-safe habitat all over Aotearoa New Zealand.

‘You’ refers to all those that interact with The Kiwi Trust, such as subscribers to our newsletters, visitors of our website (https://savethekiwi.nz/), purchasers of our products, our volunteers, fundraisers, donors, and participants of our activities and conservation efforts, and persons engaged by us, our partners, suppliers or otherwise relevant to our activities.

This privacy policy explains how we may collect, store, use, and disclose personal information (as defined in the Privacy Act 2020).

Collection of personal information

We may collect your personal information:

• when we engage with you in person or through our partners, service providers, or those who we work with when carrying out our conservation activities;
• when you voluntarily provide your information to us, such as when you contact us (including, your name, email address, phone number, postal address and date of birth), for example, when filling in a form or survey, making a donation, or in any way participating in or relating to our conservation activities;
• when you visit our website, such as by using cookies to track your click behaviour including the content you access and any services you utilise on our website; and
• when we aggregate information related to our website traffic that may not identify you as an individual but may help us with insights into the website’s usage.

We may indirectly collect (and you authorise us to do so) your personal information from third-parties including:

• automated monitoring technologies, through API’s, log files, usage monitoring software and cookies operating on our websites;
• if you are a dog owner participating in our Kiwi Avoidance Training programme, we may collect your personal information (such as your name and contact details) indirectly from the trainer who conducts your dog’s Kiwi Avoidance Training, where the trainer uploads that information to our register on your behalf rather than you providing it to us directly. Trainers are not contracted by us; we facilitate the Kiwi Avoidance Training programme and audit and assess trainers who participate in it; and
• any other third party who you have authorised to disclose your personal information to us or who you have authorised us to collect your information from.

The collection and disclosure of your personal information to us by these third parties may also be governed by terms you have agreed with them, including their privacy notices. We recommend that you review those terms and policies carefully and ensure that you are comfortable with them before sharing your information.

We may also collect your personal information from publicly available sources, and otherwise as permitted under the law.

It is your choice whether you provide us with your personal information. However, if you choose not to, we may not be able to contact you, accept your donations, help you engage with us or take part in our conservation activities, or respond to your requests. For example, if you make a donation and do not provide a contact address, we may not be able to provide a receipt or if we conduct a conservation activity in your area, we may be unable to record and track our progress.

Use of personal information

We may use your personal information for the following purposes:

• to send you newsletters if you join our mailing list to update you on any other information related to our business that we think you may be interested in;
• to process your donations,
• to acknowledge and thank you for your donations and let you know about the impact that your donations have made;
• to communicate with you for general contact or feedback enquiries or respond to any questions you may have for us;
• to invite you to participate in our conservation activities, campaigns, appeals or research for Save the Kiwi;
• to record, measure, keep track of, assess, and analyse our conservation efforts; .
• carry out advertising and marketing activities and other promotional and publicity purposes, including direct marketing, market research, analytics, and surveys;
• combine it with information about you that is publicly available and/or our third-party service providers have, for the purposes set out in this privacy policy;
• for internal analysis and record keeping;
• to maintain a register of dogs accredited under our Kiwi Avoidance Training programme and to notify owners when their dog is due for a refresher course,
  and for any other purpose which: 
  • is stated to you at the time of collection;
  • you authorise; and
  • we are required and/or permitted to do so under the law.

Commercial Electronic Messages

When you submit an online form to provide us with electronic contact details (for example, email address or mobile phone number), you agree that we may contact you using those methods and that we may send you electronic messages for any of the purposes set out in this privacy policy. You may unsubscribe from email communications at any time by using the link at the bottom of our emails.

Disclosure

We may disclose your personal information to our partners who take part in our conservation activities, our service providers, contractors, and agents, such as marketing and analysis contractors, auditors, information technology and web support contractors, employee contribution schemes and banking agencies who are contracted to assist us in our operations.

We may also disclose your personal information if required or authorised to do so by law.

Storage & security

We will take reasonable efforts to protect personal information that is held by us from loss, misuse, unauthorised access, disclosure, alteration, or destruction. However, no method is completely secure, and while we take reasonable measures, we cannot completely ensure or promise the security of any information we collect about you.

Under the Privacy Act 2020, you have the right to request access to, and correction of, your personal information.
